I thank God for the software: World Machine.. It is absolutely fantastic, can be very simple and very complicated depending on your own choices.
It can pretty much do any terrain that you would like, and is compatible with almost everything.
What I did was the following:
A) Maya
1- Created a plane 512 in both height and width, and subdivided to 8X8.
2- Send the plane to MudBox.
B) MudBox
1- Increase the subdivisions until the polygons are about 4 million pollys.
2- Start modelling the plane until you reach the basic shape that you would like your terrain to look like.
3- Save the Plane to OBJ.
4- Open the file in World Machine.
C) WorldMachine
Start changing the properties of the terrain and follow the amazing extensive tutorial by Amir Abdaoui in this link.
D) Back to MudBox
Edit the terrain to look exactly the way you want it, and send it to Maya.
E) Back to Maya
I added the water, fog, and light, and I will add the rest of the objects and the character, and I will play around with the PaintEffects tool in Maya, and you will see the results in my next post.
